What is Cyber Grooming?

Grooming is the process of befriending and establishing an emotional connect in slow, methodical and intentional process of manipulating a person to a point where they can be sexually victimized by the online predator.
This connection is then used to solicit sexual favours from children like asking for pictures or videos showing the child’s private parts, indulging in sexting
Cyber Grooming is when a person builds an online relationship with a young person and tricks or pressures him/ her into doing sexual act.
Legal Framework for Cyber Grooming
The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012
The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (hereinafter referred to as ‘POCSO Act’), comprehensively protects children from sexual assault, harassment, and pornography.
It criminalizes online solicitation of children for sexual purposes and the use of children for pornographic purposes.
- The Information Technology Act, 2000 The Information Technology Act, 2000 (hereinafter referred to as ‘IT Act’), amended in 2008, includes provisions related to child pornography and online grooming.
It criminalizes the publication or transmission of sexually explicit material depicting children [32] and empowers the government to block access to such content - The Indian Penal Code, 1860 While not specifically addressing online grooming or Child Sexual Abuse Material (hereinafter referred to as ‘CSAM’), the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (here inafter referred to as ‘IPC’) criminalizes the sale, distribution, and possession of obscene materials involving children [34], as well as stalking through digital means.
How To Report Cyber Grooming
Steps to Report Cyber Grooming:

- Gather Evidence:
○ Screenshots: Capture screenshots of all messages, emails, or other online interactions.
○ Record Conversations: If you have had phone or video calls with the groomer, record them.
○ Save Links: Keep a record of any websites or social media profiles related to the groomer. - Inform a Trusted Adult:
○ Parent or Guardian: If you are a minor, inform your parents or guardians about the situation.
○ Teacher or Counselor: If you are at school, talk to a teacher or counselor.
○ Trusted Adult: Reach out to a trusted adult who can provide support and guidance. - File a Report:
○ National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal: Visit
https://cybercrime.gov.in/ and file a complaint.
○ Local Police Station: You can also file a complaint at your nearest police station. Make sure to mention that the crime is related to cyber grooming. - Seek Legal Advice:
○ Lawyer: Consulting a lawyer specializing in cybercrime can provide valuable guidance and support throughout the legal process.
